Decided to host my own yarn.social pod a couple weeks ago and finally got it working tonight. 2022-11-06T06:47:18Z Updated the default yarn.social SVG logo a minute ago and testing out the mobile posting experience now. 2022-11-06T07:04:02Z I think I've done enough fiddling around with octobloc.xyz configuration for tonight. Time to get some sleep. 2022-11-06T17:22:18Z Playing with feeds and replies this morning during the Spurs game. Replies to feeds don't seem to work quite like I've been expecting and feed posts don't seem to be editable. 2022-11-06T17:32:41Z (#emlgjra) Ah, looks like the reply interface needs to supply a post tag. 2022-11-06T19:54:54Z Time to go get productive on the weekend household chores front. That garage is not going to clean itself! 2022-11-06T23:27:57Z Filled the yard waste bin and three garbage bags with pine needles and I'm still not done! Pretty much par for the course for this time of year, but Friday's wind storm amped things up a bit. Time to get back to it. 2022-11-07T05:58:06Z (#5ravvda) @ I actually discovered twtxt/yarn.social shortly after learning about Gemini at the beginning of the summer, it just took me quite a while to decide on a setup and hosting course of action. 2022-11-07T13:06:01Z Snowed quite a bit overnight. I was thinking about going in to work, but clearly a good day to just work remotely and avoid the morning commute. 2022-11-07T15:19:34Z (#o3zzt4q) Ended up taking me about an hour to clear off our driveway and it's still snowing. Only had about three inches to start, but it was fairly wet and heavy. 2022-11-07T15:23:10Z (#o3zzt4q) The real pain was clearing my wife's SUV so that she can safely drive my oldest into school this morning without flinging snow chunks all over the highway. 2022-11-07T15:59:16Z Still in the process of transitioning from Dark Sky to Apple's built-in weather app on my phone. Not sure what I'm going to use on the desktop. I've actively hated darksky.net for years because it never recognizes or remembers my location, but I keep going back. Old habits die hard.😐 2022-11-08T00:07:57Z The kids want to build a jump for the little sledding hill in our front yard so I guess it's time to shovel some more snow! 2022-11-08T08:42:13Z 📺 I've been enjoying _Shantaram_ on AppleTV quite a bit. I've never read the novel, but I may have to track it down. 1980s era Bombay is a fascinating milieu and I find the characters and story quite compelling 2022-11-08T15:02:19Z (#qh35edq) @ That is a metric I can relate to!🙄 2022-11-08T15:13:09Z Need to wrap up my ballot so I can drop it off at our library ballot box later today. This area has a surprising number of unopposed candidates for the minor positions which I find depressing. 2022-11-08T17:12:10Z (#nzojsda) All done. There were actually two judge races that required some effort on my part- all four candidates seemed solid and as strictly non-partisan positions it's interesting to figure out who to choose. 2022-11-08T21:02:18Z I'm really happy with how well octobloc.xyz has been working out so far. Yarn.social's feed (persona) functionality is probably my single favorite feature because it lets me do topical microblogging. 2022-11-09T06:14:03Z (#nzojsda) Looks like only one of my two judge position choices won their race. The winner I didn't vote for is currently working as a deputy prosecutor and won quite handily which in retrospect feels predictable given the conservative tendencies of Spokane County. Regardless, all four candidates were well qualified and I'm perfectly content with the outcome. 2022-11-09T21:44:03Z Time for a little yarn post reply functionality testing. 2022-11-10T07:12:58Z _Andor_ is such a good show. That's it. That's the twt. 2022-11-10T07:55:37Z (#x43iebq) @ I'm a bit confused about how the two different reply icon buttons behave. The speech bubble with a plus doesn't supply a post id tag to the edit field at all, while the double speech (conversation?) icon supplies the id tag of the post you're replying to rather than the original root. Shouldn't both options supply some kind of id tag to the edit field? 2022-11-10T08:02:21Z (#owkdycq) @ To further clarify, this missing post id tag behavior is happening within a conversation view rather than out in the main timeline- maybe it's a bug? 2022-11-10T08:24:24Z (#c5wd4la) @ It's the dystopian spy thriller story of the beginnings of the Rebellion against the Empire five years before _Rogue One_. 2022-11-10T08:31:10Z (#owkdycq) @ Oh well, I can work around it manually for the time being now that I know what's up. 2022-11-10T16:02:41Z (#owkdycq) @ Hmm, interesting. My original interpretation was that the (#) was hidden by yarn.social's UI, but then when I saw it turn up in the UI for some posts I started to get confused because my incorrect expectation was that a (#) would either always be exposed or always hidden and a mix of the two never occurred to me.

As far as GO knowledge I have some casual programming experience and have looked at the source a little, but I wasn't able to identify the relevant parts of the code base. I am interested in understanding further, although I'm not sure how much I can contribute. 2022-11-10T16:22:28Z Had my first eye exam in forever last night and ordered some new glasses now that I have an updated prescription. I went with frames that are pretty similar to what I already use, but image mockup technology has improved a lot since the last time I ordered so I amused my kids with pictures of myself with wild frames first. 2022-11-10T17:21:05Z (#5vaid6q) @ Yes, exactly. The site I used has a mobile web app that lets you take a picture with your phone, measures your pupil distance for scale, and then automatically overlays the frames you're looking at onto your picture. 2022-11-10T21:41:20Z (#yrrkrba) @ I’ll probably start testing for work in December. Monterey broke so many enterprise relevant things (managed Apple software updates being number one) and didn’t fix them until May that I refuse to widely deploy Ventura until it’s had at least two or three months worth of updates to prove itself. 2022-11-11T19:08:01Z 📺[An Oral History of ‘Batman: The Animated Series’](https://www.vulture.com/article/oral-history-batman-the-animated-series.html)
In honor of recently passed voice actor Kevin Conroy, here is a really good read about the making of the animated show that many people consider the definitive modern take on Batman. 2022-11-13T04:34:42Z Just had an unexpected 1 second power outage. Weather is cold, but completely benign so no obvious reason for it. 2022-11-13T16:05:43Z (#izpmmbq) A brownout is probably a more accurate term. Complete disruptions caused by weather and fallen tree branches are way more common around here than power distribution failures so I don't tend to use the term very regularly. 2022-11-13T16:14:16Z (#izpmmbq) Also, I'd add that I usually just say there's a power outage or an "outage" (rather than blackout) because it's usually limited to a neighborhood or section of town and I think of a blackout as a city-wide event. 2022-11-14T05:58:07Z Had a productive day cleaning the garage out. Made a trip to the dump and there's room for my wife to park her car now. Should be able to fit both cars in a few more days. 2022-11-15T00:31:19Z New glasses have arrived and they're an improvement for general distance, but maybe not computer screen reading distance (which I need way more of the time). We'll see how they settle in. 2022-11-15T16:40:00Z My Twitter archive actually came through today so I guess not all extra services have been shutdown. 2022-11-15T17:01:08Z (#wn7pzoq) @ That certainly helps and is something I've been doing more and more in recent years. After testing and comparing further over several hours my old glasses just feel way more comfortable at screen distance so I ordered another cheap pair of the new frames with my old prescription. 2022-11-15T21:06:33Z Was not expecting to learn today that the four University of Idaho undergrads that were tragically murdered a few days ago [were all killed with an edged weapon](https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2022/nov/15/police-moscow-students-killed-with-edged-weapon-no/). The Moscow, ID police have no suspect in custody, have announced no persons of interest, and told the university community don't worry, this was an aberration you're perfectly safe.🤔 2022-11-16T22:14:24Z As I look out my office window at the snow in our yard I'm really starting to resent that we went directly from an unseasonably warm October to an unseasonably cold November. 2022-11-20T01:08:19Z Our two outdoor faucets have been leaking way too much for the freezing temperatures we've been experiencing in November so I finally fixed them today. 2022-11-20T16:26:03Z ⚽️ I like what I'm seeing from Ecuador so far. 1 - 0 over Qatar after putting away the penalty. Completely dominating the final third. 2022-11-20T16:57:44Z (#gddceza) @ It's going to be strange getting so much international soccer over the next month, but I'll take it! 2022-11-20T17:08:55Z (#l4by63q) Ecuador leads Qatar 2 - 0 at the half. They've completely dominated the game and the hosts are very fortunate to not be down three goals with the disallowed (barely offside) opening goal. I'd love to see a study of whether offside technology advancements and VAR have impacted total goals numbers across competitions. 2022-11-20T17:33:38Z [The Arc browser is the Chrome replacement I’ve been waiting for](https://www.theverge.com/23462235/arc-web-browser-review)
Good overview of the new Chrome based browser project that's been in development over the last year. I haven't tried it yet and in fact this is the first I've heard about it, but I'm always interested in browser projects that have a new approach to the web so I signed up to try the service. 2022-11-20T17:43:39Z (#l4by63q) Valencia comes off for Ecuador. The men in yellow continue to lead 2 - 0 with about 15 minutes of time left in the game. Qatar has looked a little better this half, but still pretty subpar. 2022-11-20T18:15:26Z (#l4by63q) [Ecuador 2 - Qatar 0] Second half was pretty boring overall. Ecuador looks strong. It will be interesting to see how Senegal is without Sadio Mane because my revised (but highly fluid) expectation is that the Netherlands and Ecuador will advance out of the group. 2022-11-21T03:16:01Z My long garage nightmare has come to an end. Both cars are parked inside tonight for the first time in years. 2022-11-21T03:25:03Z (#lferlna) @ It's limited release and I'm on the waitlist now so I don't know yet. At least one person I follow seems to like it though. 2022-11-21T16:31:53Z (#lferlna) @ I'll see what I can do. For the record I'm not a Chrome fan either. 2022-11-22T15:55:32Z The original forecast was for snow this afternoon, but now it looks like it may be coming as rain. Weird to be bouncing back to much more typical November weather after the early snow and unseasonably cold last couple weeks convinced me it was going to be an early winter. 2022-11-23T17:16:05Z Driveway was pretty slick this morning thanks to the snow turning to rain late so I had to break out the salt. I shoveled it twice last night, but my timing was a bit off since it snowed a little bit more after my final pass. 2022-11-23T17:32:36Z Still a bit sore from Monday's dodgeball games at work (we have an annual Thanksgiving week event) and I only played in about 4 games total. Some of my similarly aged colleague that were on more successful teams (and played more games) were so locked up yesterday that they questioned whether they will play in the future! As someone who has always enjoyed casual competitive sports this is my main complaint about aging. 2022-11-23T19:28:39Z Whelp Hive immediately failed the service/app smell test when it refused to allow me to create an account via email and a password that met their defined criteria. Signed up out of curiosity and to nail down my usual handle, don't expect to actually use it. 2022-11-27T23:44:32Z Set up the outside Christmas lights this afternoon. We won't start turning them on for another week or so, but temperatures are supposed to drop a lot in the next week so better to get it done now. 2022-11-28T15:25:11Z Another snowy late November day and it looks like we're going to be getting at least a little snowfall almost every day this week. Don't think there's any danger of not having a white Christmas this year. 2022-11-30T20:41:29Z Big snow day. I think we're approaching 12" in our neighborhood now. I shoveled our driveway twice already and actually broke out the snowblower to clear part of the street by the curb and our mailboxes. It works great when the snow is powdery, but clogs up fast with wetter snow like we're getting now. 2022-11-30T22:55:48Z (#coxfffa) @ ![](https://octobloc.xyz/media/nNFocwU3ZiuJHgYBgSmBzQ.png)
View out my office window! 2022-12-01T17:37:09Z A school bus got stuck blocking the only entrance to our neighborhood this morning and now my wife can't drive my oldest to school either. 2022-12-06T17:19:19Z Second day of being sick. Mostly chills, minor aches, and a slight dry cough. Typical flu stuff. I did slightly burn my tongue and lips last night when I was climbing some stairs in the dark and accidentally took a big gulp of hot lemon water rather than a sip and then compounded my mistake by resisting the urge to spit it all out. 2022-12-10T08:42:56Z Our gutters are all filled with ice so I worked on clearing them a bit today, but it was mostly hopeless. More snow is on the way too unfortunately. 2022-12-10T15:42:08Z Just finished clearing a couple more inches of wet snow off our driveway and it's still coming down. Feels like this is going to be a ridiculous winter for snowfall! 2022-12-11T15:02:03Z (#dyqcq2q) Temperatures have risen in the last week, but just barely above freezing. With the gutters iced up all ll the melting snow on our roof drips directly onto our front porch stairs and walkway turning them into a highly dangerous slip zone for anyone dropping off a package or taking out the trash. 2022-12-11T15:07:37Z (#dyqcq2q) I was able to clear out most of the ice yesterday with a hammer, chisel, and a garden hose and sprayer hooked up to our washer's hot water supply. Now that it's clear I will run a deicing cable inside the gutter to hopefully prevent the issue in the future. 2022-12-14T22:47:08Z The gutter ice dam drip woes continue.🙄

Snowed a little this morning so I worked on the driveway and then got out the ladder to figure out why water was dripping down between the fascia and the gutter above our front porch and recreating the problem I thought I'd fixed on Monday. There was significant ice buildup on the roof above the gutter and along the edge, but the gutter itself was nowhere near full or frozen solid again. I removed a bunch of slush, but I'm going to need to spend more time on the gutter tonight after work as it also doesn't seem to be draining at the downspout currently. Very irritating. 2022-12-16T17:10:46Z With Twitter getting more hellish by the day, I've been tracking down more people I want to keep following on Mastodon or via rss to twtxt feeds. Yarn.social continues to be great and octobloc.xyz will remain my primary point of microblogging. 2022-12-16T21:17:09Z (#btvxgyq) @ Thanks, it's one that's offered as part of the [blot.im](https://blot.im) blogging service where I host my blog. 2022-12-16T22:45:12Z I need to get caught up on _Mythic Quest_ season 3. On a tangential note I really need to maintain a list of shows/movies I'd like to watch in the near future. I waste way too much time deciding what I want to watch when I actually have time to watch something. 2022-12-16T23:15:35Z [Rebuilt Don Kardong Bridge near Gonzaga, Riverfront Park reopens Friday for Centennial Trail users](https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2022/dec/16/rebuilt-don-kardong-bridge-near-gonzaga-riverfront/)
I'm simultaneously really happy that the Don Kardong bridge has been renovated and sad that it's lost the purely decorative triangle trusses that previously gave it so much character. It feels purely utilitarian now which is just kind of a bummer. 2022-12-16T23:29:04Z (#m5zkinq) I am curious to see how the lighting works at night. It doesn't look like it has light poles so I guess it's integrated into the railing? 2022-12-17T07:16:34Z I hope we start seeing major media outlets running their own mastadon instances for their journalists. 2022-12-17T17:01:59Z (#hjgbrxq) Alternatively, some smart people are saying they should just support the verification links for now, but longer term I think it's foolish not to invest in and own their corners of the fediverse. 2022-12-17T17:13:04Z Time to work on the front gutter again. The heating cable I ordered arrived yesterday. 2022-12-18T20:07:55Z Twitter is now banning links to virtually all social media. What a complete and utter meltdown from Elmo. 2022-12-18T22:46:33Z (#wczodra) @ He outright banned linking to other social media sites now. There’s no coming back from that and everyone is heading for the exits. 2022-12-20T17:12:27Z (#bsqemhq) I don't eat bananas. As a young child I loved them, then had a weird change of heart around age 4 where I became more aware of their quality and texture variability and didn't like them any more. As an adult I'm fully capable of eating one without any difficulty (and have proved this to myself and others), but still don't prefer them or seek them out. 2022-12-20T23:57:31Z @ is there a version of yarnd that has the toggle mentioned in [this feature request](https://git.mills.io/yarnsocial/yarn/issues/1060)? I updated to the current yarnd:dev container on octobloc.xyz for the first time since my original setup (which listed as Edge rather than 0.15.1@5f939785 like now), but it looks like it's probably not incorporated yet. 2022-12-21T20:50:20Z (#yppfwgq) @ The issue frustrates me enough that I might dig into it further, but I don't currently have the knowledge or skillset right now. Case in point, the front page of octobloc.xyz currently has posts from you that reflect language I wouldn't generally want on the front page of a website I might tell friends and family about (who wouldn't necessarily have a login). 2022-12-21T21:17:36Z (#yppfwgq) @ That's correct- I just want the option to display only local user posts on the front page. Thanks for taking a look at it! 2022-12-21T21:33:12Z Family is off running some errands this afternoon. Super weird to be at home all by myself for a change. 2022-12-22T00:43:41Z (#irc54ja) It’s not a priority for me at this point. A bridge service seems like the logical way to provide the option for those that are interested. 2022-12-22T00:50:06Z (#kpyqvka) @ Cool, thanks for your efforts. Is downloading the current dev release from docker the way to try the update? 2022-12-22T04:11:15Z (#kpyqvka) @ So unfortunately Edge seems to break login for my account right now. Switching back to dev allowed me to login again so I could post this message. It's probably my own fault if I'm not going about this in the right way. The method I was using was to stop the current container, docker rm it and then recreate via the long docker run command where I pass a bunch of paths and flags. 2022-12-22T04:17:13Z (#kpyqvka) @ Login is broken when I start this way:
`sudo docker run --env-file /home/jgilman/octobloc.xyz/config.env --name octobloc.xyz -d -p 8000:8000 -v /home/jgilman/octobloc.xyz/data:/data prologic/yarnd yarnd -R -O -A axodys -u https://octobloc.xyz`
and works again if I go with:
`sudo docker run --env-file /home/jgilman/octobloc.xyz/config.env --name octobloc.xyz -d -p 8000:8000 -v /home/jgilman/octobloc.xyz/data:/data prologic/yarnd:dev yarnd -R -O -A axodys -u https://octobloc.xyz` 2022-12-22T04:35:00Z Got in a solid half hour of indoor cycling after work for the second day in a row. Felt pretty good and got a good sweat going. 2022-12-22T15:21:36Z (#ej63sba) @ Thanks, I'm just starting my last workday before the holiday break, but should be free to work on things later today (or tomorrow). 2022-12-22T15:33:22Z Looks like it's -12° F outside right now and windchill brings it closer to -20° F for any exposed humans. Very happy to be working from home today. 2022-12-24T03:31:27Z Busy day with the family! Entertained the cousins for a while in the middle of the day and we've still got to prep for tomorrow's Christmas Eve gathering with most of my wife's side of the family. 2022-12-24T19:55:22Z Survived my last minute errands drive into town today. Had to pull over a couple minutes into the drive to scrape the ice off because my windshield wipers and defrost couldn't keep up with the freezing rain at first. Rest of the trip was uneventful and thankfully traffic was lighter than usual. 2022-12-27T07:36:19Z 🍿_Top Gun: Maverick_ was pretty entertaining. I'm glad Val Kilmer was still able to participate in spite of his real life health issues. 2022-12-27T07:41:58Z After last week's arctic blast and a nice white Christmas, we're closing out 2022 in Spokane with temperatures well above freezing and so much rain. Flooding is going to be a real issue. 2023-01-01T04:30:28Z Three and a half hours until midnight and people are already setting off fireworks in the distance. Weird and a little annoying. 2023-01-01T04:40:04Z 🍿_Strange World_ was fun. The family dynamics were amusing and wholesome despite the inevitable generational friction, and true to its name, the setting was really unique and cool. 2023-01-01T19:26:36Z Dark Sky is finally dead (thanks, Apple 😐), but it looks like [Merry Sky](https://merrysky.net) is a pretty decent replacement for the website at least. 2023-01-02T23:23:15Z Got in another easy 40 minute indoor bike ride this afternoon. I missed a couple days over the holidays, but I've been doing a much better job of getting some consistent exercise over the last couple weeks. 2023-01-03T15:08:52Z Winter vacation is over. Back to the grindstone. First task: restore order to my poor overwhelmed desk! 2023-01-03T22:30:23Z TIL [Sergey Brin is a sometimes anti-capitalizer and generally careless formatter](https://www.techemails.com/p/sergey-brin-irate-call-from-steve-jobs) and it annoys me. 2023-01-04T18:09:14Z Jeremy Renner getting injured by his own runaway Snow Cat while plowing his alpine driveway is not a great start to 2023, but I'm glad he's recovering. If I was independently wealthy with a house in the mountains near Reno, NV and a lot of disposable income I too would get a big kick out of plowing my driveway and neighborhood with one of those rigs. 2023-01-06T22:34:44Z Another surprisingly warm Spokane day. Most of the snow on the roof has completely melted off, particularly on the parts facing south. 2023-01-12T17:04:11Z Replaced the battery on my older son's hand-me-down iPhone 6s last night. Process went smoothly and the phone didn't complain about the battery not being an official Apple part so that was a plus. 2023-01-13T14:56:00Z Twitter broke third party app access today. So no more catching up on my feed to see what’s going on there when I wake up. I’m definitely ready to shift over to Ivory and Mastodon once it’s out. 2023-01-13T16:44:29Z Already losing track of January. My wife asked me this morning if I had Monday off and I hadn't realized that the MLK holiday (always the third Monday in January) was already here and this was going to be a three day weekend. 2023-01-13T16:48:25Z (#evjbp5a) My understanding is that some are definitely still working, but Tweetbot isn't which is pretty major for the iOS world (and how I found out). 2023-01-13T22:44:45Z [Interview: Derry Girls’ Siobhán McSweeney on Sister Michael](https://www.vulture.com/article/derry-girls-siobhan-mcsweeney-interview-sister-michael.html)
_Derry Girls_ has so many great characters, but Sister Michael was definitely my favorite non-family member adult by far! 2023-01-25T05:53:09Z Had a good walk along the Spokane River on the Centennial Trail while I was on campus today. Went all the way to Riverfront Park and back. Also saw a new City Line battery electric bus that seemed to be doing a shakedown run on the new route. 2023-01-27T04:45:06Z I'm not a particularly good bowler, but I had a crazy finish to my last game at the department bowling party today and rolled four straight strikes! I'd never even bowled a turkey prior to that, but I learned that four straight is apparently called a badger. 2023-01-27T16:24:24Z ['The perfect plane for the Pacific Northwest': Horizon flies last turboprop plane out of Spokane on Thursday evening | The Spokesman-Review](https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2023/jan/27/the-perfect-plane-for-the-pacific-northwest-horizo/)
I've done at least a couple flights on the Horizon turboprops over the years to Seattle from both Pullman and Spokane, but it's probably been a couple decades since my last one. End of an era. 2023-01-30T20:17:37Z 📺 *Lockwood & Co.* is a fun show built around a cool premise and the classic young heroic trio dynamic. Watched the first episode on Netflix last night and suddenly less than 24 hours later I'm halfway through the season. I hadn't heard of the books that it's based on, but I'll be tracking those down now as well. 2023-02-01T19:32:15Z Digging into all the various Mastodon/Activity Pub alternatives today. It's cool to see so much development activity in this space right now. 2023-02-01T19:47:40Z (#ztbqpcq) [Pleroma](pleroma.social) and it's derivatives have been around for quite a while, but [Takahe](https://jointakahe.org) is a newer one that was designed specifically with Docker deployment in mind. 2023-02-01T22:51:52Z Damus is pretty interesting, but the global feed is already quite the hellscape. I have yet to see anyone that I know from other forms of social media and signal to noise is quite low so far. 2023-02-01T23:19:29Z (#g224faa) @ @ Ha ha very true! I am impressed by Takahe's progress given how young it is but it still needs a bit more refinement and polishing (and its resource requirements are unclear to me). Pleroma seems solid but needs at least a 2GB vm- totally reasonable for a small community, still kind of heavy for only a few people. 2023-02-01T23:57:15Z (#vkmvp7a) @ I think I found you on there. 2023-02-02T16:18:20Z [Damus](https://damus.io) is an interesting app, but adoption and discovery are big issues right now. Crypto-dross is dominating the global timeline and nothing about the available content is going to be remotely appealing to a typical social media consumer. 2023-02-02T16:54:36Z (#oqfcuiq) I know that Jack Dorsey has an account and there's no way to locate it within Damus proper. A search of the global timeline doesn't get me there. 2023-02-03T22:08:11Z Figured out a few more things with Damus/Nostr today. Set up Lightning payments and did a 21 sat microtransaction. Successfully authenticated my ID with my own domain. Started finding interesting people to connect with and branching out from their followers. Also tried out [Iris](https://iris.to) in the web browser. 2023-02-03T23:30:53Z (#exnd2xa) @ Interesting that it performed so poorly when your tried your own relay. How many clients were accessing it at once? Overall I'm definitely not sold on it yet, while I do like fiddling around with new protocol stuff I am also very wary of the crypto-libertarian ethos that is driving the Nostr project. 2023-02-04T18:31:51Z Watched a little soccer and worked on taxes this morning so productive, but feeling kind of blah and hungry. Guess I will see about lunch. 2023-02-04T18:48:27Z (#ycjh52a) 🥶🍑 - I like how that phrase gets some bonus meaning when you emojify it! 2023-02-04T21:26:57Z 40 minute 350 calorie indoor ride complete. 2023-02-06T20:36:40Z Finally decided to replace my ancient and completely faded work photo ID card. Turned out to be painless and fully automated. Now I just need to go into work to pick up the new card (and not forget that my old one no longer works). 2023-02-07T18:52:03Z I have to hand it to our local Waste Management, replacing the garbage bin they accidentally cracked last week was a painless process. I contacted them via web chat after I discovered it, they scheduled for today, and delivered the replacement immediately after picking up this week's garbage. 2023-02-16T16:21:11Z Heh, picked up my new ID card for work, it worked perfectly to access my building, and failed for the internal storeroom next to my desk that I need to access all the time when I'm on prem. Still have my old card and it continues to work for that though.🙄 2023-02-21T04:43:07Z Finally occurred to me to switch the 22" screen off my ancient High Sierra-running PowerMac and connect it to the newer 27" iMac it's been sitting next to all along. Unsurprisingly worked great. Still need to retire the PowerMac, but that's a project for another day. 2023-02-22T17:01:16Z Monday it was sunny and showing signs of spring with 40°+ F temperatures. Yesterday night we got hit by a brief snow squall as temperatures dropped precipitously and now with today's windchill factored in it's the equivalent of 2°F and the ground is covered with snow again.🙄 2023-02-28T23:25:03Z We got enough snow overnight that I was able to get in an afternoon sled with the kids today. Got a real workout climbing the hill we go to though! Had no problem closing the 30 minute exercise ring on my watch. 2023-03-03T20:46:36Z Started looking at [Zero to Nix](https://zero-to-nix.com) and learning more about [Nix](https://nixos.org) today. Cross platform package management (and more) is really appealing to me and the fact that Martin Wimpress (of Ubuntu MATE fame) recently joined [Determinant Systems](https://determinate.systems) to specifically work on Nix is a pretty solid endorsement to me. 2023-03-03T21:14:30Z [Ephemeral macOS builds with Buildkite, Nix, and Tailscale - Buildkite Blog](https://buildkite.com/blog/ephemeral-mac-os-builds-buildkite-nix-tailscale)
Speaking of Determinant Systems, their custom, rack-mounted in someone's basement, Nix-backed macOS build system is pretty sweet! Being able to spin up freshly provisioned Macs quickly for automated builds and testing, then wipe and shutdown (awaiting next job) is super clever. 2023-03-06T15:56:02Z Looks like snow is hitting the Spokane area again this morning but my neighborhood is just getting barely visible flurries for the moment. I wouldn't mind not having to shovel the driveway today, we'll see how things shake out. 2023-03-10T17:24:02Z Set up a couple more of our kids with their own Minecraft accounts yesterday. They've been playing on a shared iPad for a few years and they've been clamoring to level up to the computer version like their older siblings for a while now. 2023-03-10T20:40:44Z Still snowing and weirdly melting on our driveway but sticking everywhere else in our neighborhood. 2023-03-16T15:15:30Z Back at the office for my weekly visit. Planning to ramp up to two or three times a week as we get further into spring and hopefully ebike commuting most of the time. 2023-03-27T20:27:17Z Finally updating a few more macs to Ventura today just in time for the 13.3 incremental update. 2023-03-28T17:58:18Z [Wavelength Messenger](https://www.wavelength.app) is pretty interesting. I've been on the lookout for something like this that could be used for private family/friend-centric groups, but the AI integration adds a new dimension I hadn't even considered. John Gruber is acting as an advisor to the company and gives a pretty thorough [introduction to Wavelength](https://daringfireball.net/2023/03/wavelength) and its evolution on Daring Fireball today. 2023-03-30T15:02:35Z [Brandon Sanderson on Building a Fantasy Empire, Wheel of Time Series, and Criticism](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/books/a43438119/brandon-sanderson-profile/)

Nice to see a fair and informative article on Sanderson in a major magazine after the recent Wired hit piece. I've actually only read at most a couple of his books, but I really admire his world building and generosity towards aspiring writers. 2023-03-31T17:33:11Z 🍿Watched the *Asteroid City* trailer and I remain in awe of Wes Anderson's distinctively quirky retro genius and his ability to seamlessly blend A-list actors with his usual troupe. 2023-03-31T20:42:11Z Giving NetNewsWire another go now that I can use iCloud to sync it across all my devices. 2023-04-02T07:28:56Z NetNewsWire has been working out pretty well as my primary news source over the last couple days. I'm kind of grossed out by just how much I relied on Twitter in that role over the last several years. 2023-04-02T19:48:04Z Younger kids managed to completely lock up their old iPad 3 by getting available storage down to 0. 16GB is so comical these days. We got it working again, but it took more time and effort than I would have preferred. 2023-04-04T18:02:59Z Continuing to find renewed happiness in RSS and NetNewsWire Pro. Having iCloud syncing just work is a big deal. 2023-04-05T16:10:36Z Finally taking some time to dig deeper into working with Docker this week. So many potential applications for work and hobby projects. 2023-04-05T19:21:23Z On a whim popped onto Mastodon a few minutes ago (probably hadn't checked in about a week) and felt kind of underwhelmed. There was definite overlap with RSS- I think I generally prefer that kind of stuff in NetNewsWire so I just need to clean up my subscriptions. 2023-04-11T22:01:29Z Having Stage Manager on my MacBook unexpectedly grab the mouse and keyboard from my desktop is a complete trip! I've used it with my iPad Pro before, but I had no idea it was on and even possible with my iMac. 2023-04-12T19:55:26Z Made a fair amount of progress yesterday in the little Grav CMS learning project I've been working on since last week. I've never been entirely satisfied with hosting axodys.com on Blot.im and am ready to shift back to something I fully control and maintain. Blot is a great boutique service and has really cool integration with DropBox/Github/Google Drive but I don't really like any of those options any more because they make mobile updating so fiddly.
